Hair Care: Embrace it
Let’s face it, Natural Black hair has been through a lot over the last few decades. For example, it was frowned upon for black professionals to wear their hair naturally or in locs at work due to the idea that it appeared unprofessional. Cases don’t end there either. Students across schools were removed from class or denied participation in school activities because they wore braids or twists.
Studies were performed that discovered how Black women with natural hairstyles were less likely to be recommended for a job interview than other black women with more western styles.
As of recently, there has been an ongoing restoration of black hair, encouraging black people to wear their natural hairstyles. Celebrities like Zendaya, Rhianna, Gabrielle Union and Beyonce have been known to rock their natural hairstyles on the runway, and advocate for natural black beauty in our society.
However, starting your natural hair care journey may be daunting but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are our tips for hair care. With the right hair care, Black hair will be Healthy, Hydrated and have less breakage.
Washing your hair should be done at least once a week or less. Washing any more than this risks drying out the hair and scalp.
Look for gentle, moisturizing shampoos, and use a conditioner with each wash, making sure that the conditioner coats the ends of the hair. While washing, massage the scalp gently. Pat the hair dry with a towel, rather than rubbing it.
Aim for products such as moisturizing shampoos and be sure to use a conditioner every wash. When drying your hair, pat the hair dry instead of rubbing it.
Here are QBeaute’s top shampoos and conditioners to add to your washing routine.
After using a conditioner, next step is to DEEP CONDITION using a deep conditioner or an oil treatment, to add moisture to the hair. Deep conditioner with oil or shea butter is usually best. Here are some of our favorite selections:
Combing your hair while it is wet prevents the hair from breaking while brushing. Here are a few quick tips to comb your hair. Using a spray bottle filled with water can help the hair remain wet.
- Apply a Moisturizer or a leave-in conditioner while the hair is still wet.
- Using a rat-tail comb, divide the hair into sections for better combing.
- Comb the divided parts from the ends upwards using either a Wide-Tooth Comb or Detangling Hair Brush.
It is important after washing, to ensure that the hair does not damage in sleep. Movement during sleep can rub against the hair and absorb moisture from the scalp. To prevent this, use a silk or satin pillowcase or use a silk or satin hair wrap.
